asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what decision has been reached regarding the application forwarded by the hon. Member for Eton and Slough on behalf of two Ukrainian residents of Slough for their fiancÉes to be permitted to enter the United Kingdom so that they may marry.
As the hon. Member has been informed, I am prepared to authorise the grant of visas in these cases, provided the applicants can produce to the Visa Officer in Belgrade travel documents bearing adequate return facilities to Yugoslavia.
Is the right hon. Gentleman aware how much the prospective bridegrooms appreciate the speedy and sympathetic action of the Home Office in this matter—and undoubtedly the brides, too? I wonder whether the right hon. Gentleman would be prepared to act as best man at these weddings.
The Home Office is always ready to further the course of true love. The question is whether the Home Secretary has the liberty and freedom to perform such an honourable office as the hon. Member suggests.
