Oral Answers to Questions — Trade and Commerce – in the House of Commons at 12:00 am on 2 December 1958.
asked the President of the Board of Trade to what extent aircraft manufactured in Prestwick have been exported during the last six months; and what steps he is taking to assist the sale of such aircraft to the Middle East and China.
Six aircraft manufactured in Prestwick have been exported during the last six months. As regards the second part of the Question, all the facilities which the Government provide for exporters are available to assist the firm in its efforts to secure further sales of aircraft, not only in the parts of the world mentioned but elsewhere as well.
Do I understand from the latter part of the Answer that it is now possible to export aircraft to China? In view of the fact that the Prime Minister has said that the greatest possible market is overseas, could the hon. Gentleman tell us whether there is any real possibility of an increase in orders and whether he is doing anything about it?
Since 15th August there has been no embargo on the export to China of civil aircraft manufactured at Prestwick, and the company has already sold some aircraft in the Middle East, as the hon. Gentleman knows. Export licences are required for aircraft for all destinations, but no application by the company has been refused over the last twelve months.
