Much is already known about this, and I do not think that the inquiry suggested would add to our knowledge.

Does not the right hon. Gentleman agree that it is disturbing to know that so many people are suffering from tuberculosis in Sunderland, in view of the considerable housing programme undertaken since the war and the full employment which the country enjoys? Would it not be worth while to ascertain the other factors which have contributed to the still substantial incidence of tuberculosis?

There are no fewer than 11 county boroughs with a higher rate than Sunderland. I do not see that an inquiry would add to our knowledge. I am advised that one reason, which is common to many neighbouring authorities, is the severity of the climate.
