asked the Minister of Works whether he will now begin the necessary thinning of the trees in Birdcage Walk and the second row in the Mall.

The Minister of Works (Mr. P. G. T. Buchan-Hepbum):

My Advisory Committee on Forestry suggested that thinning the second row of trees in the Mall should be so timed that the change in appearance would be a gradual one. I am, however, considering whether this should be done next winter: but I would like to see the row which has already been thinned in leaf before coming to a decision. I am also considering the problem of Birdcage Walk, which is a more difficult one.
