asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what progress has been made towards acquiring the land for the Stevenage by-pass.

Land plans have been prepared and negotiations will be opened shortly with landowners for the acquisition of land on the three-mile length of the by-pass between Bridge Road and Broomin Green Lane.

While thanking the Minister of Transport for that news of progress, which will be very much welcomed by everyone living in the neighbourhood of this very dangerous road, may I ask him to press ahead with the preparation of land plans for the rest of the by-pass and the acquisition of the land with the greatest speed?

I know my hon. Friend's views, which he has expressed on several occasions, as to the importance of this by-pass, and to a very considerable extent I share them.
