Mr. G. Wilson:

asked the Minister of Health what priority the South-Western Regional Hospital Board and his Department give to the building of a district hospital at St. Austell.

No decision has yet been taken as to the priority to be given to this scheme. The extent and scope of the provision required are at present under consideration by the hospital management committee and regional hospital board.

Mr. Wilson:

Can my right hon. Friend give an assurance that the recent decision to build an area hospital at Truro will not prejudice the building of a district hospital at St. Austell, in respect of which a legacy of £63,000 is at hand?

The legacy could meet only a fraction of the capital cost involved and would not help towards maintenance which I would have to bear in future years. Of course, the general provision in an area is taken into account, but I know that the needs of St. Austell are prominently before the regional hospital board.
