Oral Answers to Questions — Ministry of Food – in the House of Commons at 12:00 am on 17 February 1954.

asked the Minister of Food whether he will make inquiries of the Soviet Government on the possibility of their exporting to this country tinned salmon.
Dr. Hill:
Russian canned salmon is still being delivered under the terms of last year's contract with the Ministry of Food. As my right hon. and gallant Friend has already announced, the trade in canned salmon is being returned to private importers this year and he does not, therefore, propose to enter into any new negotiations for supplies. Further imports from Russia this year will be a matter for negotiation by the trade.

Whilst the Minister may not be desirous of entering into actual negotiations, surely he can make some inquiries, because he will agree that if we can get this tinned salmon without spending dollars, it will help the balance of payments. Would he not at least make a few inquiries to assist private business?
Commander Charles Donaldson

Will my hon. Friend keep in mind the fact that the salmon which comes from Canada is also red and that it is preferable to buy from Empire countries than from the Soviet Union?
Ministers make up the Government and almost all are members of the House of Lords or the House of Commons. There are three main types of Minister. Departmental Ministers are in charge of Government Departments. The Government is divided into different Departments which have responsibilities for different areas. For example the Treasury is in charge of Government spending. Departmental Ministers in the Cabinet are generally called 'Secretary of State' but some have special titles such as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Ministers of State and Junior Ministers assist the ministers in charge of the department. They normally have responsibility for a particular area within the department and are sometimes given a title that reflects this - for example Minister of Transport.
