asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he has any information as to the whereabouts of Mr. Sanders, who is imprisoned by the Hungarian Government.

No, Sir. The Hungarian Government have provided no information whatsoever about Mr. Sanders since his trial and conviction last February and have even refused to convey to him a letter from his family in this country informing him of his father's death.

Is it not a fact that, in international law, accredited representatives of nations have a right of access to their imprisoned nationals? Can nothing be done about this man?

We take the same view as the right hon. and gallant Gentleman. We made representations on several occasions that Mr. Sanders should be visited by His Majesty's Consul but they have so far refused. We have done a great deal in this matter, in as much as we broke off trade relations with Hungary in an effort to get Mr. Sanders out.

No, Sir. He has not been allowed to see him, even when Mr. Sanders was awaiting trial.
