asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can now give any further information as to the position with regard to the grievances of ex-Service men in Jamaica; and whether any fresh steps have been taken to redress these grievances.

Mr. Creech Jones:

As a result of the Debate in the House of the 20th July, I asked the Governor to let me have a report on the complaints of ex-Service men in Jamaica and a statement of the policy of his Government in this matter. I shall communicate with the hon. and gallant Gentleman as soon as I have received the Governor's reply.

Is it not rather a long time to wait for a reply on a matter of this kind?

Mr. Creech Jones:

I have asked the Governor to give most sympathetic consideration to the representations that have been made.

Since my right hon. Friend has said that he took this action as a result of a Debate in this House, could he cause the contents of his communication to the hon. and gallant Member for Petersfield (Sir G. Jeffreys) to be communicated to the House as a whole, either through the OFFICIAL REPORT, or otherwise?

Mr. Creech Jones:

If a Question is put down, I will endeavour to supply the answer.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
