Oral Answers to Questions — Police – in the House of Commons at 12:00 am on 20 October 1949.
Lieut.-Commander Clark Hutchison:
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if it is the intention of the Government to introduce legislation in the lifetime of the present Parliament to facilitate the reciprocal enforcement of orders for aliment and maintenance in England and Scotland.
Mr James Ede
, South Shields
My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and I hope that it will be possible to introduce legislation on this subject before long, but I am sorry that I cannot give an undertaking in the sense suggested.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
