asked the Minister of Works what are the estimated requirements of cement per month for the hydroelectric schemes, for factory building, for house building and for other purposes, respectively.

The estimated monthly requirements in Scotland for hydro-electric and other power stations are about 12,000 tons, and about 20,000 tons for housing. Forty thousand tons a month are supplied for other purposes.

May I ask my hon. Friend, in view of these figures, whether he is still satisfied that there is sufficient cement going to Scotland?

There has been more than a 30 per cent. increase in the supply of cement over the last few months.

But in spite of the 30 per cent. increase, there is still a shortage.

Minister

Ministers make up the Government and almost all are members of the House of Lords or the House of Commons. There are three main types of Minister. Departmental Ministers are in charge of Government Departments. The Government is divided into different Departments which have responsibilities for different areas. For example the Treasury is in charge of Government spending. Departmental Ministers in the Cabinet are generally called 'Secretary of State' but some have special titles such as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Ministers of State and Junior Ministers assist the ministers in charge of the department. They normally have responsibility for a particular area within the department and are sometimes given a title that reflects this - for example Minister of Transport.
