Sir Waldron Smithcrs:

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the Government have issued a request to the Commonwealth and the Colonies to cut down the import of textiles; and what percentage was suggested of the 1936 figures.

I am not aware of any such specific request having been made.

What is meant by "specific"? Will the hon. Gentleman explain "specific"? Has no request been made at all?

What I meant by "specific" is that no request of this kind has been made by His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom to any of the Commonwealth Governments.
