Dr Santo Jeger

12:00,
26 June 1947
asked the Minister of Education whether, in considering the applications of local authorities for compulsory purchase orders to secure land for the implementation of school building programmes, he will ensure that those cases in which demolition of occupied houses is necessary shall be delayed until housing accommodation is more plentiful and in any case shall not be dealt with before those in which no destruction of housing accommodoation is required.
Mr David Hardman
, Darlington
In considering proposals to acquire land, whether by agreement or compulsory purchase, my right hon. Friend always has regard to the nature of any buildings already erected on the land. Furthermore, under Defence Regulation 68 C.A., housing accommodation cannot be diverted to non-residential purposes without the consent of the housing authority.
Ministers make up the Government and almost all are members of the House of Lords or the House of Commons. There are three main types of Minister. Departmental Ministers are in charge of Government Departments. The Government is divided into different Departments which have responsibilities for different areas. For example the Treasury is in charge of Government spending. Departmental Ministers in the Cabinet are generally called 'Secretary of State' but some have special titles such as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Ministers of State and Junior Ministers assist the ministers in charge of the department. They normally have responsibility for a particular area within the department and are sometimes given a title that reflects this - for example Minister of Transport.
