asked the Minister of Health if he is aware that practically every set of ordinary architectural or housing drawings now submitted to Government Departments for approval is examined by not less than four separate groups of Government-employed architects, each group having the right to require alterations; and if he will take steps to end this waste of money and delay caused by this duplication of effort.

No, Sir. If the hon. Member has particular cases in mind I shall be glad to look into them.

Is it not desirable that this work should be expedited and that four different groups of Government-employed architects should not have the same privilege to cause delay?

The hon. Member is making an allegation without bringing any evidence in support of it.

Minister

Ministers make up the Government and almost all are members of the House of Lords or the House of Commons. There are three main types of Minister. Departmental Ministers are in charge of Government Departments. The Government is divided into different Departments which have responsibilities for different areas. For example the Treasury is in charge of Government spending. Departmental Ministers in the Cabinet are generally called 'Secretary of State' but some have special titles such as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Ministers of State and Junior Ministers assist the ministers in charge of the department. They normally have responsibility for a particular area within the department and are sometimes given a title that reflects this - for example Minister of Transport.
