Mr. E. P. Smith:

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will appoint a working party to investigate and report upon conditions prevailing in the theatre industry.

I do not think that the theatre industry comes within the type of industries for which the Board of Trade consider a working party desirable.

Mr. Smith:

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the rentals charged by theatre landlords are gross and excessive, and that they are directed particularly against non-profit making companies, which are subsidised by the taxpayer, and contravene the spirit of the agreement arrived at by the Board of Customs and Excise? Will he accept my assurance that an inquiry of the nature I have suggested is urgently necessary?

How far that is true I am not in a position to say, but the fact is that we have no power at present to deal with these rents if they are extortionate.
