asked the Attorney-General whether, in view of the wide disparity, both in court awards and in settlements made out of court for accidental injury, he will consider laying down a scale of minimum compensation as a guide to both sides in arriving at just settlements and as a measure of protection for injured persons?

I do not think, having regard to the wide disparity that exists between different injuries and between the circumstances of those who suffer, that the suggestion of my hon. Friend is practicable. No doubt when cases are settled each side has regard to the sums which have been awarded by courts in reasonably comparable circumstances.

Is the hon. and learned Gentleman aware that only quite recently a boy was awarded £100 for having his leg off, while a lady, who received a scar on a part which cannot be seen, was awarded £75? Would he regard this as equitable?

If my hon. and gallant Friend will give me the full circumstances, I will look into the matter.
