asked the Home Secretary the rank and salary of the Governors and Deputy-Governors of the prisons at Brixton, Holloway, Durham, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol, Dartmoor and Manchester; the class of prisoners received in each prison; and the approximate numbers of each class of prisoner in custody at each establishment on 1st November, 1942, respectively.

As the answer involves a number of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT. I may say that in the time available it has only been possible to obtain figures for the total population on 3rd November last in each of the prisons

In addition to the salary paid to Governors and Deputy Governors, quarters are provided or an allowance is paid in aid of rent. Medical attention is also provided under certain conditions. The salary scales of the rank of Governors and Deputy Governors referred to are as follow:—
