asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can give the approximate numbers to date of British civilians, men, women and children, who have been taken prisoner by the Japanese?

I regret that it is impossible at present to furnish the information desired by my hon. Friend. Every effort is being made through diplomatic and other channels to obtain information regarding casualties, prisoners-of-war and civilian internees in Japanese hands. It is feared, however, that some time may elapse before information becomes available.

Can the hon. Gentleman indicate when that information is likely to be available?

No, Sir, but we are pressing for it. The hon. Gentleman will appreciate the difficulties.
