Oral Answers to Questions — Ministry of Supply. – in the House of Commons at on 17 December 1941.
Mr. David Adams:
asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply what are the grounds for the appointment of Mr. Butlin as Director of Hostels; what are his duties and responsibilities; what are the terms of the appointment; and whether other persons were considered before this appointment was made?
In view of his extensive experience in organising the feeding and accommodation of large numbers of people, Mr. Butlin was invited by my noble Friend to assist the Ministry and the voluntary organisations who are managing hostels on the Ministry's behalf. His appointment as Director of Hostels is full time with no salary or allowances. The answer to the last part of the Question is in the affirmative.
Mr. Adams:
Is the Minister aware that this appointment has given considerable disappointment, particularly with regard to the voluntary organisations at present running these hostels, as it is believed that an entire change of spirit will be introduced, contrary to the spirit which is at present in existence in the hostels?
The gentleman in question has given us his services voluntarily. He has very great experience, and I think it is only fair to give him a chance.
