Oral Answers to Questions — National Finance. – in the House of Commons at on 27 November 1941.
asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the salary and other emoluments paid to the Director of National Service Entertainment?
This officer is an employee of the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes, a company trading not for profit, which, in common with similar bodies, is not called upon to furnish details of salaries paid. I understand, however, that this officer receives an inclusive salary of £2,000 per annum.
Can my right hon. and gallant Friend assure us that that is the only sum paid to this gentleman out of public funds?
I do not know that he is paid out of public funds at all. As I said, he is an officer of the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes.
When was the N.A.A.F.I. a private company?
Is not the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that a considerable subsidy is given out of public funds to the N.A.A.F.I.? How can he say that this gentleman does not receive a considerable proportion of his salary and emoluments out of public funds?
It is quite true that certain payments are made at present to the N.A.A.F.I., but it is a company trading not for profit.
They are public funds, just the same.
