Oral Answers to Questions — Military Service. – in the House of Commons at on 22 May 1941.
Mr George Mathers
, Linlithgowshire
asked the Minister of Labour what opportunity for appeal against calling up will be afforded to a man previously called up and medically examined but subsequently found to be in a reserved category in respect of which the age has been raised, thus removing his reservation?
Mr Ernest Bevin
, Wandsworth Central
A man who loses his reservation owing to a change in the Schedule of Reserved Occupations may then be permitted to apply for postponement on the ground of exceptional hardship although the normal time for applying, that is not later than two days after medical examination, has expired.

I am much obliged to the Minister for the Answer, but would it not be better to regularise the position and safeguard the army authorities from taking in a man who might be medically unfit by providing for a new medical examination? In this particular case it is a number of months since this man has been medically examined?
Mr Ernest Bevin

I should want notice of that question.
Ministers make up the Government and almost all are members of the House of Lords or the House of Commons. There are three main types of Minister. Departmental Ministers are in charge of Government Departments. The Government is divided into different Departments which have responsibilities for different areas. For example the Treasury is in charge of Government spending. Departmental Ministers in the Cabinet are generally called 'Secretary of State' but some have special titles such as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Ministers of State and Junior Ministers assist the ministers in charge of the department. They normally have responsibility for a particular area within the department and are sometimes given a title that reflects this - for example Minister of Transport.
