asked the Secretary of State for War why section leaders acting as quartermasters in the Auxiliary Territorial Service company offices are being deprived of their clerical pay of 1s. 6d. per day while storeswomen working in ordnance depots, and whose duties are no more responsible, are allowed this 1s. 6d. per day; and why a quartermaster section leader in the Auxiliary Territorial Service is not allowed to wear her badge of rank?

Trade pay is authorised for members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service who have passed appropriate tests as tradeswomen and are employed in replacement of soldier tradesmen. A section leader acting as company quarter-master-serjeant does not replace a soldier tradesman, she is not, therefore, eligible for trade pay. Ordnance storewomen are tradeswomen and replace soldier tradesmen; they therefore receive trade pay. A section leader whatever her duties wears the badges of her rank, but the question of the appropriateness of this rank for the duties of company quarter-master-serjeant in the Auxiliary Territorial Service is at present under consideration.
