asked the Prime Minister whether the assurance he recently gave to the trade union- movement to restore the privileges willingly suspended to assist the war effort when the present crisis has passed away will be given to private industry which has likewise willingly suspended corresponding privileges, and thereby remove the fear that the very totalitarian system against which we are now waging war will be permanently fastened upon British industry?

I am not sure what corresponding privileges my hon. Friend has in mind. If he is apprehensive about the policy of concentration of production, I would invite his attention to the recent white paper (Cmd. 6258). This makes it clear that we seek to reconcile traditional British economic policy with the requirements of a war-time economy; further, it is our aim to facilitate a rapid return after the war to an industrial structure appropriate to peacetime conditions.

White Paper

A document issued by the Government laying out its policy, or proposed policy, on a topic of current concern.Although a white paper may occasion consultation as to the details of new legislation, it does signify a clear intention on the part of a government to pass new law. This is a contrast with green papers, which are issued less frequently, are more open-ended and may merely propose a strategy to be implemented in the details of other legislation.
