asked the Postmaster-General if he is aware that the present postal rates for parcels sent to men serving overseas constitute financial hardship on some wives and dependants; and whether any further reduction is contemplated in the near future?

The postage rates on parcels for officers and men serving overseas were substantially reduced in October last. The present charges compare favourably with those which were in force in the last war, and are appreciably lower than those on parcels for civil addresses in the same countries. My right hon. Friend regrets that he cannot see his way to make a further reduction.

In view of the fact that soldiers' wives and dependants carry a havy burden owing to the increase in the cost of living, will he assure the House that the Post Office will keep this matter in mind?

I will assure the hon. Member that we will keep the matter in mind but I can hold out no hope of a decrease.
