As I informed the hon. Lady on Tuesday, 14th November, it would need considerable research to ascertain at any given time the number of cases in which candidates have joined for duty and have not yet been gazetted.

Miss Ward:

May I have an answer to the second part of my question? Can the Northern Command not inform him how many officers have not yet been gazetted?

The hon. Lady is dealing with dynamics and not with statics. The position is changing daily.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
