Colonel Arthur Evans:
asked the Secretary of State for War whether, in view of the fact that bottled English beer can only be supplied to other ranks in France by the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes at the price of 7d. for a reputed pint, he will see whether it is possible to make arrangements with French brewers for a suitable grade of British beer to be brewed locally, and so reduce the cost of transport and distribution, and the price to members of the British Expeditionary Force?

Arrangements are already being made with French brewers to produce a draught beer of British character, which it is thought will be to the taste of the troops, and which can be sold at the equivalent of not more than 5d. a pint.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
