asked the Secretary for Mines whether, in the weekly statement of accidents in the mines and quarries of the United Kingdom which he has decided to publish, he will give the character of the accident and the district or county in which it occurs, with the figures for the corresponding period of the previous year?

I propose to start by publishing a weekly analysis which will show the number and character of fatal and serious accidents for the country as a whole. I shall be guided by the general response in deciding further developments. I hope these statements will serve as a constant reminder to all concerned of the gravity of the problem of ensuring safety and of the need for constantly renewed efforts by all concerned to improve the position.
