asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster the annual expenditure on the College of Imperial Defence; how many complete courses were carried through in the years 1935 and 1938, respectively; and where are the students drawn from?
The expenditure on the Imperial Defence College in 1938 and 1939 is estimated at £12,730 and £12,550 respectively. One completed course was carried through in each of the years 1935 and 1938. The students are drawn from the Royal Navy, the Regular Army, the Territorial Army, the Royal Air Force, the Home Civil Service, the Colonial Service, the Indian Civil Service, the Indian Army and the Fighting Services of Australia, Canada. In view of the increased mechanisation of the armed forces will the right hon. Gentleman draw the attention of those responsible to the possibilities in the great field there is of drawing students from elementary and secondary schools?
That is another question, but the hon. Member may rest assured that the implications of mechanisation are fully borne in mind.
