The recommendations are now being examined in detail by my Department in consultation with the other Departments concerned. I hope to be in a position to make a full statement shortly and to indicate the steps that will be taken to give effect to the approved proposals.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
