asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will make a statement as to any reports he has received respecting conditions in Ethiopia; and whether he has information respecting Italian activity at Jibuti and along the Jibuti-Addis Ababa railroad?

With regard to the first part of the question, the position is still as described in the reply which my Noble Friend gave to the hon. Member for Caerphilly (Mr. Morgan Jones) on 24th May. With regard to the second part, the Italian authorities, with a view to expediting the clearance of goods of Italian and foreign origin lying at Jibuti and destined for Abyssinia, recently passed a decree, the effect of which appears to be to concentrate in official hands the entire trade in such goods through Jibuti until the goods reach Diredawa or the Ethiopian frontier station at Aiscia.
