asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether the First Commissioner's permission was secured for an application for a licence to sell beer or wine to be consumed on or off the premises in respect of property under his control at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich; and whether he proposes to extend the policy of permitting liquor licences to be applied for in museums and other property for which he is responsible?

My Noble Friend is aware, both as First Commissioner of Works and as Chairman of the Trustees of the National Maritime Museum, that the refreshment caterers are permitted under their agreement to apply for a licence to supply alcoholic liquors for consumption with meals, and he is aware that they have applied for a licence. The museum is under the control, not of my Noble Friend as First Commissioner of Works, but of the trustees of the museum. Similarly, my Noble Friend is not responsible for the control of the other national museums. It is the policy of my Noble Friend to allow liquor licences to be applied for in respect of refreshment rooms which are situated on property under his control.
