Sir Reginald Craddock
, Combined English Universities
asked the Secretary of State for India what compensation has been granted to the dependants of the Indian magistrate and inspector of police murdered in endeavouring to sup press the hook-swinging self-mutilation ceremony by Hindu fanatics at Virasinghampet, in the Presidency of Madras, in the summer of 1934?
Mr R.A. Butler

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
