98.asked the Chancellor of the exchequer whether, in view of the fact that no estimate is available for the cost to local authorities of public assistance from 1st October to 31st March to those persons who will come under Part II of the Unemployment Insurance Act on the appointed day, he will state on what basis he is negotiating a settlement with the representatives of the English local authorities?
The chancellor of the exchequer is the government's chief financial minister and as such is responsible for raising government revenue through taxation or borrowing and for controlling overall government spending.
