asked the Home Secretary whether, under the powers granted to him by the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1908, Section 8, he will consider the giving of a grant for administrative purposes to a society or department who will deal with the scientific treatment of delinquency, as outlined in the Police Chronicle and Constabulary Word of 1st February, 1935?

Section 8 of the Prevention of Crime Act, 1908, applies only to a society which has undertaken the duty of assisting or supervising persons discharged from a Borstal Institution, and could not be interpreted as applying to a society such as that to which my hon. Friend refers.

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider following the example of the Borstal system in regard to adult treatment, and, if this system is not applicable, will he consider other means so that criminals may be considered from the moral and medical standpoint as well as the ethical and judicial standpoint?

I am afraid that the hon. Member must be satisfied for the moment with the answer that I have given, but, if he cares to see me, I will discuss the matter with him.
