9.

asked the Postmaster-General, with regard to the site which has been or is being purchased by his Department in or near Hanbury Street, Whitechapel, what is the area of the plot and for what purpose is it to be used; and whether, in view of the urgent necessity of finding suitable housing sites to alleviate the serious position in that neighbourhood, he will consult with the Minister of Health with the object of transferring the site for this purpose?

A site, 12,450 square feet in area, has been acquired at the junction of Hanbury Street and Deal Street, Stepney, for a Post Office garage and workshop. I am in consultation with the Minister of Health on the question whether the site is likely to be required for the purpose of a housing scheme.

While expressing thanks to the right hon. Gentleman, may I ask him to impress upon the Minister of Health the fact that this is a very congested area, that there are appalling housing conditions there, that many of the people are living under conditions which are absolutely intolerable, and that every square inch of space which is available ought to be utilised for the accommodation of those people who need it so badly?

I have no doubt that my right hon. Friend and myself will have regard to what the hon. Member has said, but I would like to add that it is very desirable in the interests of the neighbourhood that the Post Office needs should also be considered.
