– in the House of Commons at on 26 November 1934.
Mr Patrick Munro
, Llandaff and Barry
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the appeal in the case of the motor-ship "Omar" has yet been heard by the Finnish authorities; and whether any representatives of the British interests concerned were present at the appeal?
Mr John Simon
, Spen Valley
The appeal in this case has been heard, and the judgment orders the confiscation of the "Omar" and the imprisonment of her captain. I am not yet clear as to the exact circumstances of the trial and am making further inquiries.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
