– in the House of Commons at on 26 November 1934.
Captain Sir Peter Macdonald
, Isle of Wight
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whet/her any reply has yet been received from the Japanese Government with regard to the question of the establishment of an oil monopoly in Man-chukuo; and what action is to be taken with regard to such reply?
Mr John Simon
, Spen Valley
Yes, Sir. I have received a reply from the Japanese Government to the representations made by His Majesty's Ambassador in regard to this question, and His Majesty's Ambassador has been instructed to communicate to the Japanese Government the observations which this reply has appeared to require. The whole question is still engaging the close attention of His Majesty's Government and I can make no further statement at present.
Captain Sir Peter Macdonald
, Isle of Wight
Can the right hon. Gentleman say when he will be in a position to make a statement?
Mr John Simon
, Spen Valley
I could not indicate a date, but the matter is now in actual discussion.
Sir Percy Harris
, Bethnal Green South West
Is His Majesty's Government co-operating with the United States and other countries who are interested; or are we taking single action?
Mr John Simon
, Spen Valley
No, Sir, all proper contact is being kept.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
