69.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that the Scottish Milk Marketing Board has fixed the price of milk at 1s. 3d. per gallon; that the contract price previously was, approximately, 10d. per gallon; that about 1,000,000 gallons of milk are purchased per year by the Corporation of Glasgow, and the increase in price will mean an additional annual cost of £8,600 to the health committee and £3,850 and £1,750 to the education and public assistance committees, respectively, a total increase of £14,200; and whether he will take steps to ensure that some rearrangement is made to effect a saving of this increased cost?

My right hon. Friend is aware of the position as stated in the question and is directing the Committee of Investigation for Scotland to consider the matter and report to him in accordance with Section 9 of the Agricultural Marketing Act, 1931.

The matter has either just been sent to them or will immediately be sent to them. It will depend on the amount of matter before them when this question can be finally dealt with.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
