asked the Secretary of State for Scotland with regard to the scheme of the Department of Agriculture for Scotland for providing plots for unemployed miners and others, whether, in view of the report by Sir Arthur Rose that the results so far obtained are encouraging and the system may be said to have passed the experimental stage, he will take steps to secure the more rapid development of the scheme by augmenting the fund available for it

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether the experiment of providing plots of land of from one quarter of an acre to one acre has been successful; and whether he proposes to continue the scheme?

My right hon. Friend proposes to continue the scheme, and additional funds have been made available for this purpose. I take this opportunity of appealing to owners and tenants where a demand exists to aid the development of the scheme by making available the moderate amount of land generally needed where the land in their possession is suitable for the purpose.

Can my hon. Friend say to what extent it is proposed to augment the fund?

Ample funds are available in relation to the number of applicants. I do not think I need say more than that, but I will give my hon. Friend the figures in private if he desires them.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
