Sir M. MACDONALD:

83.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps, if any, can be taken to correct the great anomalies which occur in the rentals of the same class of house belonging to the local authority at Mallaig?

The anomalies referred to are due to the fact that houses have been built under different Acts with varying provisions as to the amount of rents to be charged. The Department of Health have, however, under consideration proposals made by the county council with a view to achieving uniformity in the rents, and I shall inform the hon. Member in due course of the result.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
