Oral Answers to Questions — Transport. – in the House of Commons at on 30 July 1934.
Sir Geoffrey Mander
, Wolverhampton East
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware of the formation of a directorate in Memel representative of only four members of the Landtag, out of a, total of 29; and whether, in view of the fact that this is contrary to Article 17 of the Statute of Memel, to which Great Britain is a party, he will consider the advisability of making suitable representations?
Mr Anthony Eden
, Warwick and Leamington
Article 17 of the Statute provides that the directorate must enjoy the confidence of the Chamber of Representatives and shall resign if the chamber refuses its confidence. I have not yet heard the result of the directorate's first meeting with the Landtag.
Sir Geoffrey Mander
, Wolverhampton East
Will the right hon. Gentleman bear in mind the strong feeling existing at Memel on the question and keep a careful watch on the situation?
Mr Anthony Eden
, Warwick and Leamington
The directorate met the Landtag last Friday, and I do not know what happened.
Mr Herbert Williams
, Croydon South
May we have an assurance that we are not going to undertake a war in this connection?
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
