asked the Secretary of State for India whether he will cause inquiries to be made with a view to preventing quantities of Japanese goods being shipped via Manchukuo and Chinese ports in order to escape inclusion in the quota restrictions imposed by the Indo-Japanese trading agreement?

My hon. Friend may rest assured that the Government of India are fully alive to the necessity of enforcing the quota restriction, but they will be sent a copy of his question. The Government of India have already prohibited the import of cotton piece goods manufactured in Japan, irrespective of port of origin, unless they are covered by the Japanese export certificate which brings them within the quota.

While appreciating the attention that has been given to this important matter, may I ask my hon. Friend to see that specific attention is paid to this question of importation by way of Manchukuo, which is increasing?

I have already assured my hon. Friend that this question has been sent to the Government of India.
