Mr Campbell Stephen
, Glasgow Camlachie
asked the Minister of Labour the greatest number of young people between the age of 18 and 21 who have been registered as unemployed since the coming into operation of the present Unemployment Insurance Act and the smallest number and, if possible, the number at the age of 18, 19, and 20, respectively?
Mr Arthur Steel-Maitland
, Birmingham Erdington
Separate statistics in respect of the age group 18 to 20 inclusive are available only from 9th July, 1928. The greatest number of persons aged 18 to 20 on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain since that date was 131,345 on 31st December, 1928, of whom 85,436 were males and 45,909 females. The lowest number recorded was 93,428 on 15th April, 1929, for which figures were issued to-day, of whom 61,797 were males and 31,631 females. I am unable to state the numbers aged 18, 19 and 20 respectively.
Ministers make up the Government and almost all are members of the House of Lords or the House of Commons. There are three main types of Minister. Departmental Ministers are in charge of Government Departments. The Government is divided into different Departments which have responsibilities for different areas. For example the Treasury is in charge of Government spending. Departmental Ministers in the Cabinet are generally called 'Secretary of State' but some have special titles such as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Ministers of State and Junior Ministers assist the ministers in charge of the department. They normally have responsibility for a particular area within the department and are sometimes given a title that reflects this - for example Minister of Transport.
