– in the House of Commons at on 17 April 1929.
Sir Harry Brittain
, Acton
asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether the Empire Marketing Board proposes to make any grant to or otherwise to assist the League of Empire Housewives?
Lieut-Colonel Leo Amery
, Birmingham Sparkbrook
The Empire Marketing Board welcome all well-directed voluntary efforts to give effect to a policy, similar to their own, but it is not their practice to recommend grants to outside organisations for such purposes, and I cannot hold out hope of an exception being made in the case of the league in question. If suggestions for assistance in other forms were made they would, of course, be considered.
Mr Archibald Skelton
, Perth
What are the qualifications of an Imperial housewife?
Mr Ernest Thurtle
, Shoreditch
Can the right hon. Gentleman say what other forms of assistance he has in mind?
Lieut-Colonel Leo Amery
, Birmingham Sparkbrook
There are various ways, by organisations, of co-operating with the work of the Empire Marketing Board without seeking cash assistance.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
