Oral Answers to Questions — Post Office. – in the House of Commons at on 16 April 1929.
Sir Harry Brittain
, Acton
asked the Postmaster-General the number of horse-drawn and mechanically-propelled vehicles, respectively, used for the conveyance of mails; whether it is proposed entirely to replace horse-drawn by mechanically-propelled means of transport; and, if so, when?
Sir William Mitchell-Thomson
, Croydon South
The number of Post Office owned vehicles used for the conveyance of mails by road is at present about 2,500. All are mechanically propelled. As regards services provided under contract, I am not able to give figures, but the number of horse-drawn vehicles is relatively small. It is not proposed to replace horse vans where they are economical and meet postal requirements efficiently.
