Viscountess ASTOR:

asked the Minister of Health what changes in administration he is proposing as a result of the recommendations of the Report of the Committee of Inquiry into the London Lock Hospital; and whether the constitution of the board of management has been so changed as to give a greater choice of women?

As indicated in reply to questions on this subject on the 14th March, the hospital is a voluntary institution, and responsibility for carrying recommendations of the Committee into effect rests, not with my right hon. Friend but with the board of the hospital. My right hon. Friend has not yet received specific proposals from the board as to their reconstitution, but he understands that they contemplate the inclusion of women on the board in future.

Minister

Ministers make up the Government and almost all are members of the House of Lords or the House of Commons. There are three main types of Minister. Departmental Ministers are in charge of Government Departments. The Government is divided into different Departments which have responsibilities for different areas. For example the Treasury is in charge of Government spending. Departmental Ministers in the Cabinet are generally called 'Secretary of State' but some have special titles such as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Ministers of State and Junior Ministers assist the ministers in charge of the department. They normally have responsibility for a particular area within the department and are sometimes given a title that reflects this - for example Minister of Transport.
