– in the House of Commons at on 20 March 1929.
Mr William Kelly
, Rochdale
asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been called to the action of the colonial secretary and chief of police at Gibraltar in confiscating all copies of the newspaper "Hojas Libres"; has this action had the approval of the Colonial Office; and what steps are being taken to prevent this restriction of the freedom of the Press?
Mr William Ormsby-Gore
, Stafford
I have no information regarding this incident, but will make inquiries of the Governor.
Mr William Kelly
, Rochdale
Will those inquiries be made immediately, in view of this paper being suppressed by the Government?
Mr William Ormsby-Gore
, Stafford
I have no in formation as to what this paper is or why it was suppressed, but I will make inquiries at the earliest possible moment.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
