Mr Harry Day
, Southwark Central
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can inform the House what will be the estimated cost of transmission of the British official wireless service which is prepared by the Foreign Office and transmitted from the General Post Office high-power wireless station at Rugby for the 12 months ended to the last convenient date?
Mr Austen Chamberlain

In the 12 months ended 31st December, 1928, the amount due to the General Post Office in respect of the transmission of this service was £8,974. The cost for the current year is unlikely to show any marked variation from this figure.
Mr Harry Day

Does the right hon. Gentleman think that such a great expenditure is necessary?
Mr Austen Chamberlain
, Birmingham West
Yes, Sir. I think we get value for our money.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
