The firm is the Great Metropolitan Window Cleaning Company, Limited. Ordinary employés are engaged on day work at wages varying from 1s. to 1s. 3d. an hour, according to their experience, and work nine hours a day, except on Saturdays, when they work five hours. The Fair Wages Resolution is incorporated in the contract conditions.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
