asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has given further consideration to the question of compensation to those members of the police force in the colliery districts who had to undertake extended duty and forego all leave during the time the Emergency Regulations were in operation?

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to him on the 13th December last, to which I have nothing to add.

Mr. WORE-BELISHA:

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the reply to which he referred was indecisive, and that the reason I have put down this question is in order to get a decisive answer?

I am afraid I have nothing mere decisive to add at the moment.

asked the Home Secretary whether he will consider recognising the services rendered by special constables during the general strike in May by awarding to them a badge or medal?

My hon. Friend may not be aware that a Special Constabulary Medal was instituted by Royal Warrant in 1919. I will send him a copy of the Warrant setting out the conditions on which the medal is awarded.

Does that warrant apply to services rendered during the recent general strike?

Officers who were engaged in the general strike are, of course, open to have that medal awarded to them, if it be deemed fit to do so, but of course there is no possibility of granting a medal to every special constable.
